Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Riverside Training Spalding LTD is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2019

Reporting period being the 12 months to September 2019 in line with audited financial statements and the corporate reporting of emissions for that period.

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

  • Timer switches fitted to electrical sockets.
  • The requirement to travel for business has been reduced.
  • Meeting local companies to try and work more locally to the office.
  • Reduction in waste by making recycling bins more available.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 150 tCO2e by 2035, This is a reduction of 65%

Carbon Reduction Projects - Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2019 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 180 tCO2e, a 29%ge reduction against the 2019 baseline and these measures will be in effect when performing the contract:-

  • Three office staff cycle to work, we have secure cycle parking & take part in the governments Bike2work Scheme to encourage others.
  • Purchased a hybrid vehicle for managers to use for business travel.
  • Storing items digitally reducing the need to photocopy.
  • Reduction in printing goods and no longer offering textbooks.
  • Switch marketing to a more digital focus.
  • Low energy lightbulbs installed in the office and training room.
  • Reducing business, travel so tutors only visit students once a month.
  • When possible office staff work remotely (currently 1 or 2 days per week) to reduce the amount of us commuting.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Working with the landlord to get more fuels efficient heating and cooling systems put in place.
  • Working with the landlord to get solar panels fitted.
  • Moving to a paperless office where we upload all information.
  • Encouraging Tutors to move to electric vehicles by working with local dealerships to offer competitive lease deals on them.
  • Speaking to local council to get charging points installed in the car park.

How to measure your carbon footprint - British Business Bank (british-business-bank.co.uk)

Scope 3: Category 1 Purchased Goods and Services

We have worked this out based on the amount we spent on purchasing marketing material and stationery then used the average-data method from ghgprotocol.org to calculate the co2 emissions.

Category 5 waste generated in operations

We do not have specific data on the waste generated as an organisation as this is managed through the lease arrangements as part of the building operations, but we do generate waste through employee printing along with brochures and events information, banners and other materials. Waste includes plastic non-recyclable cups and can even include lunch-time related rubbish. We plan to address these areas through behaviour changes in the Strategies for Carbon Reduction.

Category 6 business travel

Business travel is measured and reported in the organisation's Annual Report and Accounts each year. Amount paid was divided by 0.45ppm and used an average vehicle MPG of 40mpg,

Category 7 employee commuting

For the base year of 2019, we do not have any firm data on how employees were travelling into the office. To calculate an estimated figure for the financial year 2019, we have taken the number of employees, their working pattern such as part time or full time, and taken account of annual leave and bank holidays. For employees, there are 261 working days per year which reduces to an average of 228 working days per full time employee when accounting for annual leave and Bank Holidays. We calculated this figure for the average UK commute of a return trip being 16.8 miles. The average UK car emissions are approximately 196.94 grams per mile. This brings in a total estimated figure of 373tCO2e.
